RED Day 15: Monday on my mind

The Boomtown Rats have a lot to answer for. Monday creeps into being through dawn’s early light and BAM there in my mind… “Tell me why I don’t like Mondays”.

Although a huge hit during my childhood I was unaware of the inspiration behind this song. So, I was surprised to discover that it was written in response to a school shooting in San Diego in January 1979. A 16 year old girl had been given a semi-automatic rifle for Christmas and shot 30 rounds of ammunition at students gathered outside their school across the road from her house. Two people were killed and nine injured. The reason? She didn’t like Mondays. It was fun and livened up the day.  Read more here

Why was a 16 year old girl with a history of violent thoughts given a gun by her father?  I’m going to leave that question unanswered.

Another song that springs readily to mind in thinking about Mondays is The Bangles’ ‘Manic Monday’. A song with a much simpler message, one of what Monday brings for many. It’s the back to work day, the getting up early day, the day where we meet our responsibilities while dreaming of lazy days in bed and a less harried existence.

So, what are my thoughts on this Monday morning? I am ok with Mondays; the return to routine and familiarity, no pressure to do anything extraordinary or to have a great time. For me, it’s having time to myself where I don’t need to organise other people or make plans.

There is comfort to be found in the normality of Monday.

I loved Manic Monday back in the day. If only life was that simple.
