The wisdom of Captain Jack Sparrow

Any excuse for a picture of the gorgeous Johnny right?!

For about a week I have been trying to write a poem for my lovely mum for Mother’s Day – “Hi Mum, I know you’re reading!” – but everything I write comes out sounding like something written by a sickly sweet greetings card company, and that’s not really me.

In search of inspiration, I was looking through some motivational quotes, as one does… I failed to find any poetic inspiration but I did find the following Captain Jack Sparrow quote:

“The problem is not the problem; the problem is
your attitude about the problem.”

These insightful words prompted me to search for further wisdom from Captain Jack, which I will come to in good time. But first, one thing I have learnt in my quest for self-awareness is that emotions are often (not always) a reaction to an external trigger and if we can control the reaction we gain control over our emotions, i.e. the problem (trigger) is not the problem; the problem is your attitude (emotional reaction) about the problem (trigger).

Because mental health is my thing, well at least it’s one of my many things, I will now put a MH spin on all things Jack Sparrow!

In the next quote we can easily see the analogy of the sea being our emotional state, e.g. depression, and we, as the Captain, will prevail over such difficult times.

“The seas may be rough, but I am the Captain!
No matter how difficult, I will always prevail.”

On a similar theme: keep going despite adversity.

“When life knocks you down, calmly get back up,
smile, and say ‘You hit like a b*tch.'”

Next we have a favourite strategy of mine:

“Close your eyes and pretend it’s all a bad dream.
That’s how I get by.”

Suppression, where we consciously ignore an unpleasant situation.

“Wherever we want to go, we go…”

“Now… bring me that horizon.”
