It’s Always You

“It’s not you, it’s me”
They say.

You don’t meet their ideals
You fight and disagree
Belittle their status
As top dog, big cheese
head honcho,
Life’s big “I AM”

They say you’re perfect
… “just the way you are”
but only if your way is their way
Unattainable standards
Moveable goalposts
That you will never reach

Impossible to believe that it’s not you
… as it’s always you
A disappointment
and failure
Their eyes bear witness
and condemn

Your pomp and conceit,
self-importance and vanity
Your selfish arrogance
and narcissism
How could I compare?
How could anyone?

“It’s not me, it’s you,
it’s always you”
