Step Away (poem)

I’m closing down
inside, the constant chatter
tells me, I don’t want to be here
says, it’s too difficult, too tiring
too painful
I don’t want to be here
surrounded by the chatter of happy
ordinary
people, people who have no idea
Disengaged and distant, I don’t want to be here
if only I could disappear
for just a short time, step away from the chatter
the pain and exhaustion
find somewhere peaceful
and quiet
somewhere that I do want to be
