Glimmer of Light

Written to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1.

Glimmer of Light

A cold winter brings unwelcome reminders
as snow falls and covers the landscape
like clouds of ash from enemy bombs
the memories linger on through time

Bombers overhead like falcons in search of prey
snow and rain give a welcome reprieve
with enemy planes grounded tonight
we know our families will sleep safe

As the sound of gun fire echoes in frosty air
heartbeats quicken, in perfect synchronicity
with tanks rumbling and shells exploding
remember the trenches, the smell, the fear?

As dark days give way to glimmers of light
we stand strong in conflict, determined
as those before us, we stand for justice
we fight for peace, we strive for a better future

One hundred years past, their legacy endures
as clouds give way to clear blue skies
our free nation indebted forever
will always remember and honour
