Subsequent to my ‘mind muddled’ post on Friday, I had a moment of clarity yesterday – regular readers may have noticed my absence from WordPress.
This clarity was prompted by
- the discovery that I had not been successful in two poetry competitions where the prizes were publishing contracts, and
- reading this – ‘How to make a living as an author without a publisher‘
Now while I have no delusions that I could ever make a living from becoming a published poet, I was interested to read the perspective of a self-published author.
Prior to reading this I had a view that in order to be a “real published poet” I would need to do this via a publishing house and that anyone can self-publish. However, this article swayed my opinion and I came to the realisation that the quickest way to achieve my dream of having at least one book of my own work published was to do it myself.
With the inclusion of my work in ‘Further Within Darkness & Light’ I have the opinion that I’m already successful in being published as I have something concrete to put in my author bio. So yesterday I started a Create Space account and spent many hours selecting poems, editing them and formatting the document. It will take a few weeks to get to the point that I’m ready to press the big red publishing button but this is my plan… I may be creative and scatty but I’m also driven and that might just be the right combination.
