Animal therapy

I’ve mentioned before how I will not be sharing much personal stuff regarding my family and this remains the case. However, I want to write a little of my older son, my younger son (being my running buddy) is mentioned in my blog fairly regularly and I feel the need to inject some balance.

My older son is currently between school and college, a time where life could feasibly come to a complete standstill as the summer holidays go on and on, and the opportunity to exist solely in a world created through the xbox/playstation is beckoning. With this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to find something outside of the virtual world of gaming to engage him.

We are very fortunate that just 2 miles from our home is a pony sanctuary (honestly, our village may just be the best place on earth to live!) and as my older son loves animals* I got in touch to ask about him volunteering there. Following a visit last week, where I was pleasantly surprised at how calming it was, he (we) started volunteering yesterday. I can definitely recommend animal therapy as a soothing, relaxing activity and I have the feeling that I may be accompanying my son on his volunteering visits for some time.

  • he is quite obsessed with watching our visiting hedgehog crunch across the gravel of our front garden each night, he loves dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, donkeys (there’s a very fabulous donkey sanctuary in Devon), pretty much any animal on the planet. One school mum used to call him the dog whisperer because of his ability to calm an energetic puppy!

  1. I am so in love with these photos! A couple of days ago I cycled to Ham House beside which is a stables where I stood for a good fifteen minutes watching a woman exercising her horse … it was beautiful, utterly beautiful. She had a wonderful seat and the horse was listening to her every moment. Brilliant.
