My running week (32)

Well the biggest, most exciting bit of running related news is that I was given my club vest at training on Monday evening!  Which is super fantastic as on Sunday evening (I can only plead insanity here) I signed up for not one but two 10k races, one this month and one in September.  I am very relieved that I didn’t accidentally choose the half marathon distance for the later one, now that really would have been insane!  So, in a little under two weeks I will be running for the first time in club colours… little happy dance!  Am I a proper runner now?!

Running club training on Monday was tough, it was quite humid and a little too warm and I am yet to get into the ‘club speak’ for what we’re doing.  Top coach, J, says “Three 800s followed by 200s, then six 300s followed by 100s, and we’ll do a relay at the end”… I’m like huh?  Ask other coach, M, as I’m standing next to him…

  • me: so how far is 800?
  • M: two laps
  • me: ok so it’s two laps followed by half a lap
  • M: yes (pause) and then you do another 800
  • me: so that’s another two laps
  • M: yes, followed by 200
  • me: that’s a half lap right?
  • M: looks at me as though I’m a bit stupid (made that bit up)
  • J (top coach): are you ready Karen?
  • me: yes, sorry, I was just trying to work out what I was supposed to be doing

And off we go, after two 800s and I’m on my second 200… me to random runner “excuse me, how many 800s did we have to do? Was it two or three?”  And then after my third, to coach M “what was the next bit?”… running club is proving to be a mental workout as well as physical, might take a pen next week and write it on my hand!

Half an hour later and I’m ready to mosey on home, but no… what about the relay?  OMG!  I forgot the relay!  So, not wanting to look pathetic I eagerly join in.  And I try my best, but sprinting really isn’t my thing.  200m may not look far but after three 800s/200s and however many 300s/100s my little legs were saying enough already let’s go!  I’m pleased to say my team mates took our dismal last place with good grace, although I suspect they won’t be too keen to have me on their team again!
