My running week (37b)

Just a quick update on my race today and maybe a few stats if I feel inclined to look them up!

So today I was at the awesomely named English Half Marathon, which is a series of races run from Friday to Sunday in and around the town of Warrington, Cheshire. This year was the 10th EHM.

I was worried about the race because I didn’t want to be unwell during it and there were also a lot of people so I was feeling a little anxious as well, but I just stepped out of the crowds and began talking to another young lady who was also staying towards the back. The half marathon and 10k runners started together at 9am and the routes split at around 3k and then re-joined towards the end of the race.

I had told myself to stick to a pace of 11-12 minutes per mile and started steadily completing my first mile in 11:33, but I felt great and having started towards the back it was easy to just accelerate a little to go past runner after runner after runner, meaning my second mile was faster at 10:19, and then my third mile was faster again. Pretty soon my tracker watch beeped for the 5k halfway point, and I was still feeling great, a touch sweaty but my breathing was in control so I just kept going and kept overtaking people, picking my pace up again for the last mile and doing a great finish along the red carpet and through the golden gates.

I loved it.

It’s incredible that just a month ago I did my first 10k road race and found it so hard, tiring and a real struggle to keep going. And today was fabulous, in contrast it felt like such an easy run – yes, I did have a couple of minor dizzy moments – nothing overly concerning, at least not in my opinion, I just felt amazing.

Despite my intentions to finish around 1 hr 15 mins, I achieved an official time of 01:02:25, which was only 1 min 24 sec slower than my previous race… and I wasn’t pushing myself today, just totally in my own little running bubble of happiness.

Great t-shirt and awesome spinning medal!

Just brilliant! I can’t wait for my next race.
