National Poetry Month 1

What better place to start than at the beginning?

Each day during October I’ll publish a new poem linked to a theme word.  I don’t have a plan of what words I’ll take inspiration from, I’ll just make it up as I go along and see how it goes.

Day 1 is simple though.  Prompt word: beginning.

This poem references that serendipitous walk alongside the canal on a frosty January afternoon.  It was that walk on that day which inspired my first two poems Winter Sun and Canal Life.  I cannot say for certain that I wouldn’t have ever written poetry if it hadn’t been for that day, as there may have been an alternate source of inspiration the next day, week or month.  But history was written on that day, and it has been life changing.

Canal Walk

a winter day in January
ice was on the ground
we took a walk in frosty air
watched ducks on the canal

all was peaceful, all was calm
our rosy cheeks aglow
with winter sun low in the sky
it then began to snow

the beauty of this winter’s day
so clear for us to see
carving pictures in my mind
with words of poetry
