Patchwork progress

Good morning!  As well as dealing with the whole Christmas thing – you know eating etc. – I’ve been busy unleashing my creative side and making good use of my den.  Yesterday I completed the centre piece of my patchwork quilted table runner.  It’s far from perfect but as a first attempt I’m really pleased with it.

In working on this I have learned quite a lot about cutting, piecing and following instructions…

  1. wear reading glasses to ensure the dimensions are read correctly – I merrily cut my first fabric in 4 1/2 inch strips only to discover it should have been 4 7/8 inches
  2. it’s ok to make mistakes (see above) – I simply switched which fabric I used for which bits
  3. seam allowance is important – without an accurate 1/4 inch (5mm) seam the pieces don’t quite fit together accurately
  4. purchase a special foot for your sewing machine to help with point 3
  5. don’t do triangles for your first project – I helpfully read this in a book after starting this project
  6. join the side panels to each square before joining the squares – I didn’t do this and as such (and because of point 3) my side panels didn’t meet which means I had to add some extra pieces
  7. it’s ok to make more mistakes (see above)!
  8. using tartan for a border isn’t ideal
  9. be flexible – if something doesn’t look right change it
  10. colour reproduction in photographs is much better in natural light

There are probably many more things that I’ve learned about the process but for now I’ll finish with some photos.
