I’d painted the background of these on Sunday after I’d finished my first painting, included again as taken in better light.
For this one I was experimenting with getting a colour gradient going dark to light from the top of the paper. Many of the exercises in the book involve light and shade, including this vase. I’m not sure my shadow is quite right but I like the shaded effect on the vase itself.
The background of this was an attempt to mix purple from red and blue paints. The author of the book, Matthew Palmer states that purple is one of the colours he buys and I now understand why.
Sticking with light and shade but working against a dark background I attempted a fairly basic tree silhouette with darker accents to indicate more shaded areas.
Today I’m going to re-read the first chapters and work out which colours and brushes I need. I highly recommend this book, it makes understanding the technical aspects of painting so easy.
