Having decided that I wanted to work on watercolour flowers, and having bought three books on the subject (see my post Flower Art), I chose to start with Trevor Waugh’s ‘Learn Flower Painting Quickly‘.
I like Trevor’s loose style of painting which gives a great visual impact without the fine detail. The book explains how flowers can be broken down into simple shapes, e.g. a spiral for a rose, hearts for some petals and leaves, and cones for poppies. There’s not much in the way of step-by-step tutorial but just enough to be able to try the image for yourself.
I used vermillion for the red of the poppies with ultramarine blue for the centre, the background is ultramarine blue, yellow ochre and sap green.
This second watercolour is also based on one from Trevor’s book.
